Ruth got here degree from a Christian institution in Illinois, Wheaton College, as a Human Development major and completed her undergraduate studies in sociology, psychology, and anthropology. She got her masters in clinical psychology, became a MFT and later became an LLP, doing Marriage and Family Counseling.

Based on my conversation with Ruth, I discovered that the PsyD programs are somewhat limited than a PhD program, as there are not many teaching possibilities available to a PsyD as compared to PHD. She explained that if she had to do it all over again, she would go straight for the PsyD. After the training, I would need to complete 1,520 hours of practice under a supervisor, and gain some experience, before I would be able to practice with a license. She further explained that having a doctoral degree is like combining all the different therapy licenses into one; and that the advantage of PHD programs, is that there are more scholarships and funding available.

She also explained that a masters in psychology is not as widely recognized in the United States; whereas, getting a Masters in Clinical Social Work degree would offer more job opportunities. The first year of the Master’s program, builds theoretical foundation for social work practices, and year two is spent gaining experience through practicum and internship.

Summary:

1. Complete (MSW) 2year full-time; 3year part time

2. Take exam to become licensed master social worker (lmsw)

3. Practice therapy in family mental health setting for 2years under supervisor

4. Take clinical license exam (LCSW) which allows you to work for another agency while you are still setting up your own practice

5. Private practice

6. Take courses to specialize in marriage and group therapy.

7. Advertise 8 week seminar for couples (I'm an LCSW specializing in family and marriage.)
